Verbal Reasoning Questions, Part 2

11. Explain the scientific importance of the following passage: "Traditionally, scientists have classified living organisms into five kingdoms, which includes the Animal Kingdom, the Fungi Kingdom, the Plant Kingdom, the Protist Kingdom, and the Monera Kingdom. However, over the past three decades, scientists have begun to realize that there are actually two distinct types of organisms that had formerly been included together as members of the Monera Kingdom. As a result, many scientists and science textbooks have decided to split the Monera Kingdom into two separate kingdoms known as the Arachea Kingdom and the Bacteria Kingdom. The Arachea Kingdom consists of the single-celled organisms without a nucleus that usually inhabit extremely harsh environments that other single-celled organisms without a nucleus would not be able to survive in, such as highly acidic water or in extreme temperatures. The Bacteria Kingdom, on the other hand, consists of any single celled organism without a nucleus that normally lives in and around other members of the Animal Kingdom."

12. Identify the main idea of the following passage: "The United States Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams and was signed by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 in order to declare the separation of the American Colonies from Great Britain. However, the purpose of the United States Declaration of Independence was not only to inform the world of the colonists' intention to seek independence, but also to explain the justification behind their desire to separate themselves from Great Britain. In fact, the Declaration of Independence specifically states '…that all men are created equal…with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness' and '…To secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men deriving their power from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter it or to abolish it.'"
