MCAT Test Biological Sciences Section - Biology Topics Covered
The biological sciences section of the MCAT test is designed to assess an individual's knowledge of a variety of basic scientific concepts related to biology and organic chemistry. The main biology topics covered in the biological sciences section of the MCAT test include enzymes and metabolism, DNA and protein synthesis, eukaryotes, genetics, microbiology, generalized eukaryotic cells, specialized eukaryotic cells and tissues, nervous and endocrine systems, circulatory systems, lymphatic systems, immune systems, respiratory systems, skin systems, digestive and excretory systems, muscle and skeletal systems, reproductive systems, and evolution. Some of the specific concepts related to biology covered on the exam include basic metabolism, control of enzyme activity, DNA repair, DNA replication, enzyme structure and function, eukaryotic chromosome organization, fungi, genetic code, meiosis, mitosis, Mendelian concepts, recombinant DNA, the structure of eukaryotic cells both general and specialized, transcription, translation, virus structure, and a variety of other similar concepts including information related to the organ systems of the body. However, even though there are a wide range of topics covered in the biological sciences section of the exam, it is important to realize that the biology concepts covered in this section are primarily related to the life processes and general concepts associated with vertebrates and microbes. It is also important to note that the questions included in the biological sciences section of the MCAT test are not designed to determine if an individual has an in-depth knowledge of each topic, but are instead designed to determine if an individual has a basic understanding of the most important material.
